Thank you for visiting the home page of Slayer: Roleplaying in the world of Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
Avid fans of Buffy may have noticed that this season of Buffy has given us a little more insight into areas of the Buffy world that haven't always been so clear. For example, we now know that Magik can be used to quickly and painlessly cast small spells, provided the caster understands the inner workings of the spell well enough. In the season premier, for example, Willow lights the beach party fire with two words and a guesture. Other areas, such as how Vampires experience emotions and the existence of Gods, are similarly expanded on. As a fan, I love anything that gives more detail to the show. But as the author of Slayer, it's given me some work to do.
My first edition of Slayer has some glaring inconsistencies with things that have been shown in season five. So, I have crawlen back to my keyboard to attempt to bring the game more in line with the show it honors. This time, I want to be sure that my RPG has as few guesses as possible in it's rules, so I will be taking some time to get it just right. Hopefully, second edition will be finished and posted within a month or so, but in case it isn't, here's the most glaring defects in the game, and my suggestions for how to deal with them:
--Magik should no longer be divided into regular spells and "personal" energies. As shown when Willow teleports Glory, any spell, no matter how carefully prepared, can be lethal to the improperly trained. I suggest that all spells should cause a certain amount of damage (battering or wounds, as seems to fit the case), but can be resisted in the same manner as all other damage, by rolling the character's Magic Ritual skill against a target number of 6 and subtracting one point of damage for each success.
--Personal Energies should be removed from the game.
--Simple spells, such as creating light or lighting a campfire, should be given casting times of only a few seconds, and can be used as an action in combat.
--Contrary to what I wrote, it has been shown that a person can only become a Vampire if they are fed the blood of a Vampire while near death. Vampire blood will cause certain visions when fed to a healthy mortal, but nothing more, and Vampire saliva will do nothing other than make things damp.
